The London chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) launches its monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with a special Film Financing Townhall at the illustrious Soho Hotel. Their classy facilities are conveniently located near Soho Square in London's West End.

This grassroots community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attendees. It provides unbiased insight & education about the business of film and film financing in particular. The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to welcome real-world financiers among our guests!

The evening's five six presentations plus panel discussion address key issues relevant to filmmakers, financiers and anyone interested in the economics, business mechanics, and financial dynamics of motion pictures. They are followed by Q&A time. Attendees also have ample opportunity to interact & network with our featured experts and amongst themselves.

Host logoThis month's Film Financing Townhall in London is hosted by the esteemed Soho Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel located in a quiet street near Soho Square, right in the heart of London's creative and entertainment community. It is surrounded by some of the best restaurants and bars, vibrant cafes and most exciting theatre and night life. The city's business district is within easy reach, making the hotel great for both business and leisure. When entering the lobby, guests immediately notice a ten feet high bronze sculpture of a cat, created by sculptor Fernando Botero. Paul Brett

Paul served as Vice President of European Marketing for Miramax International, as well as Path/Guild, VCI and CIC, a joint venture between Paramount and Universal. Deborah Burton

Speaker headshot 4Deborah Burton is a Founding Member of the Tipping Point Film Fund, which draws on public support to back challenging, truth-telling cinema documentaries that combine the popular appeal of film with ambitious international campaigns. Deborah first worked for UNESCO backed African publications before programming international film and arts festivals. A production assistant for David Puttnam's company Enigma, she went on to be Director of First Film Foundation, working with new directors from the UK, Europe and USA, developing and executive producing first films for cinema and TV and working with leading producers and directors as mentors. Deborah later became head of development for Patrick Rainsford and actor Gabriel Byrne's company Mirabilis. Her first short screenplay starred Martin Sheen, and she is a former Governor of the London Film School. A change of direction took Deborah into the NGO sector, first in the peace movement and in 2004, she joined the Christian Aid on Trade Justice campaign as Global Campaigner, a role to popularise the campaign by enlisting internationally recognised ambassadors and delivering high-profile events as well as film and TV projects focused on trade issues. Deborah currently serves as a Management Committee Member of the Tipping Point Film Fund. Through its audience funding model, Tipping Point backs films that challenge prevailing thinking, reveal the real story behind some of the issues we think we know, and reflect the global inter-connectedness of the Rich World and the Global South, for good and bad. Elliot Grove

Speaker headshot 5Elliot Grove founded Raindance Film Festival in 1993, the prestigious British Independent Film Awards in 1998, Raindance Canada in 2004, Raindance.tv (co-founder) in 2007 and Raindance New York in 2010. Raindance is devoted to independent filmmaking and its emerging talent. Elliot has produced over 150 short films and five feature films. He has written eight scripts, one of which is currently in pre-production. His first feature film, "Table 5" was shot on 35mm and completed for a total of £278.38. Elliot teaches writers and producers in the UK, Europe, Japan and America. He has also written two books that have become industry standards: "Raindance Writers' Lab: Write + Sell the Hot Screenplay" (Focal Press 2008) and "Raindance Producers' Lab: Lo-to-No Budget Filmmaking" (Focal Press 2004). Two other books, "Beginning Filmmaking: 100 Easy Steps from Script to Screen" and "130 Projects to Get You Into Filmmaking," were published in 2009. His first novel, "The Bandit Queen," is scheduled for publication next year. Open University awarded Elliot an Honourary Doctorate for services to film education. (more) »

Nicki Hattingh

Speaker headshot 6Nicki Hattingh is the Founder and Managing Director of CAIN - The Creative Arts Investment Network, the only business angel network in the UK specifically sourcing private equity investment for film, theatre and music companies and projects. Nicki is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and sits on the Policy and Research Committee of the British Business Angels Association (BBAA). Creativity, according to Hattingh, is big business. Each year, CAIN brings together some of the most exciting creative arts companies with some of the industry's most serious investors to fund all manner of film, theatre and music projects. As the only UK-based business angel network in this space, CAIN is committed to increasing the level of private equity investment available to directors, producers and artists. Nicki launched CAIN in 2008 after leaving one of the UK's leading media and green technology business angel networks, having increased the investment rate success for presenting companies nine-fold during her tenure as Network Manager. Patrick Pinnock

Speaker headshot 10Patrick Pinnock runs the London chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) and organizes IIFF's monthly Film Financing Townhalls in the Greater London area. He is an entrepreneur across the retail, fashion, film and music fields. After leaving the University of Greenwich in 1990 studying IT and Business, Patrick moved to Hong Kong. There he worked first for Marks & Spencer and then for Fujitsu-ICL, where he was responsible for IT sales into major retail brands. After returning to the UK, Patrick worked as a consultant for music and entertainment retailer HMV. He also co-ordinated the 2002 London Chinese Film Festival. Patrick moved to Italy and then to Switzerland in 2003, where he worked on film projects and learned all about film finance using international co-production. He was also head of a Swiss non-profit organisation as well as IT and web consultant for a Swiss fashion label. Patrick runs his own artist management company and has managed Grammy nominated artists Inventing Eve. Whilst living in Switzerland, he produced a documentary film about a Switzerland based African American musician, which was broadcast on Swiss TV. Patrick is completing a Masters in Music Industry Management and Artist Development at Thames Valley University's London College of Music. (more) »
